Choose Clean Water Statement on the Retirement of Senator Ben Cardin

(ANNAPOLIS, MD)—Today, Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) announced his retirement. Senator Cardin has served in Congress since 1987, first as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and in the U.S. Senate since 2007. Prior to entering Congress, Senator Cardin was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1967-1987, serving as Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1979-1987. In response, Choose Clean Water Coalition Acting Director Mariah Davis issued the following statement:

"For more than 50 years, Senator Cardin has fought relentlessly to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay and Maryland's rivers and streams. In his lifetime of service, his accomplishments for clean water are many. They include leading the fight for federal investment in the Bay restoration effort, safeguarding our precious fisheries, improving infrastructure with critical clean water impacts, and influencing the Farm Bill to provide essential support to help farmers implement conservation projects on their land.

"Without a doubt, the Bay and its rivers and streams are healthier in large part to Senator Cardin's decades of leadership. The Choose Clean Water Coalition and its more than 280 member organizations thank Senator Cardin for all his efforts and wish him a happy and fulfilling retirement."

The Choose Clean Water Coalition is an organization that harnesses the collective power of more than 280 local, state, regional and national groups to advocate for clean rivers and streams in all communities in the Chesapeake region.
