District of Columbia

“Protect and enhance the public health, welfare, and safety…to the fullest possible preservation and protection of the environment.”

-D.C. Code § 34-2601

Washington, DC’s rivers and streams are the lifeblood of our communities—connecting neighborhoods, sustaining wildlife, and shaping our history. Yet too often, these waterways have carried the burden of pollution, runoff, and neglect. Today, while progress has been made, challenges remain—from restoring the Anacostia to protecting the Potomac and safeguarding the streams that feed them. As part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, the health of DC’s waterways is directly tied to the health of the Bay itself, making local action critical to regional recovery. The Choose Clean Water Coalition's DC Workgroup works alongside local partners and residents to defend these waters, advocate for stronger protections, and invest in the conservation and restoration. Together, we are working to ensure that every person in DC can enjoy clean, safe, and thriving waterways for generations to come.
