Governor Moore Takes Leading Role for Clean Water in Chesapeake Bay Region

(WASHINGTON, DC)—The Chesapeake Bay Program Executive Council met today to discuss the current state of the effort to restore the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and streams. Governor Moore (D-MD) was named the new chair of the Executive Council and discussed the importance of clean water and his vision to meet cleanup goals. In response, Choose Clean Water Coalition Director Kristin Reilly issued the following statement:

“We congratulate Governor Moore for his election to become chair of the Chesapeake Bay Program Executive Council at a critical but exciting moment in the decades-long effort to restore and protect the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and streams. Encouraged by our successes and empowered by new best available science, now is the time to innovate and reinvent how we work to achieve clean water for all people in the Bay region.

“With Governor Moore already embracing the latest science in Maryland through recent Executive Orders, we are hopeful he will lead a shift in our work for clean water by thinking creatively and pursuing new approaches to meet our goals. With his leadership, we must reinvigorate our collective commitment to leave a legacy of clean water to future generations.

“The rivers and streams across the Chesapeake region not only provide recreational opportunities, but are critical to local and regional economies, safeguard public health, and provide drinking water for millions of people. We have a responsibility to ensure continued progress toward our collective goals for clean water and healthy communities. This will require us to change the way we approach our restoration and conservation work to focus on measurable outcomes that center the health of people and wildlife, while identifying the barriers preventing us from fully achieving our goals.

“The Choose Clean Water Coalition and our more than 290 member organizations look forward to working with Governor Moore and all members of the Executive Council to ensure we achieve our shared vision for clean water for all 18 million people who live within the Bay region.”

The Choose Clean Water Coalition is an organization that harnesses the collective power of more than 290 local, state, regional and national groups to advocate for clean rivers and streams in all communities in the Chesapeake region.
