Why the Choose Clean Water Coalition?
Clean water is a choice for individuals, communities, states and countries. Thousands of choices are made every day that will either keep our rivers and surface waters clean, or will permit continued pollution and degradation. We can choose to improve our water, our individual lives and our communities if we are able to act with commitment and intention. We need cleaner water, and less pollution.
For more than 30 years the promises of the Clean Water Act have failed to stop much of the pollution that effects our waters. The time for promises has passed. We need results. We must begin enforcing the pollution standards and limitations we already have in place.
There is no reason our kids shouldn’t be able to swim in their local water without concerns about getting sick. The deteriorating condition of the Bay is a stunning indicator of our accumulated failure to keep pollution out of our local streams and rivers. We have been slowly destroying the economies and ecologies that depend on clean water. It is unfair for a community, a state, or an individual to pollute someone else’s water. Pollution of our waters can and must be reduced in the Shenandoah, James, Anacostia, Susquehanna, Potomac, and in thousands of smaller streams in our own backyards.
